Just like Clevinger, Sean Newcomb has a major walk issue. He issued a free pass to 12.5% of the batters he faced last year. That's absolutely a hindrance. The rest of his arsenal makes him intriguing, though.

The best asset Newcomb has is his ability to get whiffs when he's not walking guys. Newcomb had a 23.7% strikeout rate in the majors with an 11.1% swinging-strike rate. Those marks -- as you would expect -- were even better in Triple-A at 29.7% and 12.3%, respectively.

On top of that, Newcomb held opponents to a 27.0% hard-hit rate, a good chunk below the National League average for starters of 31.7%. It's hard to say definitively that he will be able to carry that skill over into 2018, but if he does, he'd be well on his way to reducing the ramifications of those walks.

Another similarity that Newcomb shares with Clevinger is that he has improved his command this spring. Through 15 innings, Newcomb has an 8.1% walk rate to complement his 24.2% strikeout rate.
