Second Tier: The Solid Alternatives

4. Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays

Jose Bautista came back in a big way last year. He was finally healthy for a full season again and proceeded to top 100 runs and RBI while posting a .402 wOBA. It's not the same Bautista we saw in 2010 and 2011, but people don't just hit 54 bombs in a season anymore. He's projected to push Stanton and finish second in home runs and runs while finishing fifth in RBI. Bautista isn't the type of guy who is going to win you a fantasy championship, but as long as he's healthy, he's definitely not going to lose you one, either.

5. Carlos Gomez, Milwaukee Brewers

Although Carlos Gomez is far from being a bad fantasy asset, he's firmly entrenched in this second level. Gomez is not projected to finish in the top 10 in the league in any of the categories listed above. If he had a mildly competent lineup around him, that runs total would certainly be higher. It also doesn't help that Gomez is projected to regress to a .265/.325/.466 slash from .284/.356/.477 last year. Still, if you're in a roto league, he probably has the sweetest combination of home run and stolen base potential available. There's a reason he's ranked fifth, but there's also a reason he still resides outside of that top tier.

6. Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles

Yesterday, Sports Illustrated's Michael Beller wrote an awesome breakdown of Adam Jones, calling him the boring but right choice after the top five guys are off the board. He could not be more right. If you're in a points league, he loses a bit of his luster with his low walk-rate, but outside of that, Jones is solid across the board. His batting average has never deviated from a range of .270 to .287 and he has hit at least 25 home runs each of the past four years. His ceiling is fairly obvious, but so is his floor. You could do a lot worse to be sure.

7. Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles Dodgers

Hello, my polarizing friend. It has really been too long.

If you plan on drafting Yasiel Puig, I suggest you invest in soft surfaces on which to bang your head. I've never owned him, and the dude has still shaved at least a few months off of my existence. His month-by-month splits from last year should explain why.

Every month, his on-base percentage swung at least 80 points. If you can emotionally deal with wanting to light your laptop on fire at least once a week, you go, Glen Coco! If not, there might be better options for you.
