The Top Three Pitchers
Chris Sale – Sale faces a Tigers lineup that recently downgraded from Jhonny Peralta to Jose Iglesias at shortstop. Not that he needs the help – his 2.92 ERA is fifth in the AL and his 9.82 K/9 is fourth. He’s also pitched much better at home this year (2.28 home ERA versus 3.55 on the road) and is pitching at home tonight.
Mat Latos – Latos has been solid all year with a 3.38 and an even better 3.02 FIP. He’s also been hot recently, allowing two or fewer earned runs in each of his last three starts. He’s also posted the best groundball to flyball ratio of his career this season, which will be important against an A’s lineup that features power threats Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Donaldson and Brandon Moss.
Gio Gonzalez – Gonzalez is looking to slow down the red-hot Braves who’ve won 10 in a row. Fantasy owners should expect Gio to rack up plenty of strikeouts; he’s got the 7th-best K rate in the National League and the Braves strike out the 4th-most often in all of baseball.
Top High-Priced Hitters
Mike Trout – Trout’s having a phenomenal year, nearly as good as his should’ve-been MVP campaign last year, but he might finish third in the voting this season. His 176 wRC+ and .422 wOBA both rank third in the majors, behind Miguel Cabrera and Chris Davis. He can rack up fantasy points on the basepaths as well: his 24 steals are second among the 31 players slugging .480 or better.
David Ortiz – Ortiz faces Jordan Lyles and his 4.98 ERA tonight in Houston. Ortiz absolutely crushes righties, slugging .610 against them over his career. This year is no different – he’s putting up a .673 mark. And on top of that, Lyles has allowed at least four runs in each of his last four starts.
Mid-Range Cost-Effective Hitters
Adrian Beltre – Beltre is mashing as usual this year, putting up a .314/.356/.527 line to go with 24 home runs. He’s facing Garrett Richards who has a reverse split this year, meaning he actually fares worse against righties. Beltre is also hitting .382 over his last eight games, with two homers.
Shin-Soo Choo – Did you know that Choo has the fourth-highest OBP in the majors this season, behind only Cabrera, Trout and Joey Votto? It’s true and he’s got a favorable matchup tonight against Oakland’s Dan Straily. Choo has a dramatic split this year – .332 against righties but just .176 facing lefties. Straily’s been worse against lefties as well (.313 wOBA vs. .277 against righties) which bodes well for Choo.
