4 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for 7/24/17
Stacking can be a controversial topic in many daily fantasy sports, but you can count baseball as a glaring exception. Here, it's universal.
Using multiple players on the same team on a given day presents you with the opportunity to double dip. If one of your players hits an RBI double, there's a good chance he drove in another one of your guys. When you get the points for both the run and the RBI, you'll be climbing the leaderboards fast.
Each day here on numberFire, we'll go through four offenses ripe for the stacking. They could have a great matchup, be in a great park, or just have a lot of quality sticks in the lineup, but these are the offenses primed for big days that you may want a piece of.
Premium members can use our new stacking feature to customize their stacks within their optimal lineups for the day, choosing the team you want to stack and how many players you want to include. You can also check out our hitting heat map, which provides an illustration of which offenses have the best combination of matchup and potency.
Now, let's get to the stacks. Here are the teams you should be targeting in daily fantasy baseball today.
Los Angeles Dodgers
As always, when Bartolo Colon is on the bump, you have a choice with the opposing offense: Do you stack them despite what will be grotesque ownership? Do you fade and hope that the high-variance nature of baseball rears its ugly head? Or do you still stack them while trying to make the batters you pick unique? Let's try to tackle that conundrum right off the top.
The appeal behind stacking against Colon should be pretty obvious. His SIERA is up to 4.96 with a 14.1% strikeout rate, and we can happily load up on bats facing that. To make matters worse in this specific matchup, Colon has allowed a 35.8% hard-hit rate and 41.4% fly-ball rate to left-handed batters, of which there are plenty in the Los Angeles Dodgers' order. So, in cash games, these guys are no brainers.
The question is more around tournament lineups. Baseball is basking in volatility, meaning that even the best stacks can fall flat on their faces. But we can still load up on the Dodgers without necessarily using the most popular individuals.
Check out the FanDuel ownership that the New York Yankees carried last week when facing Colon. These breakdowns are available every following day to numberFire premium subscribers, and they can help guide us along the path in situations like this.
Player | Spot in Lineup | FD Price | Ownership |
---|---|---|---|
Brett Gardner | 1 | $3,600 | 4.23% |
Gary Sanchez | 2 | $3,400 | 22.01% |
Aaron Judge | 3 | $4,800 | 9.61% |
Matt Holliday | 4 | $2,900 | 17.74% |
Didi Gregorius | 5 | $2,800 | 18.12% |
Clint Frazier | 6 | $2,500 | 22.30% |
Chase Headley | 7 | $3,000 | 1.44% |
Garrett Cooper | 8 | $2,000 | 5.58% |
Ronald Torreyes | 9 | $2,300 | 1.18% |
It's worth noting that the ownership on Aaron Judge was likely low because it was a slate with Clayton Kershaw. That's not an issue today, so don't expect the highest-priced guys to be low-owned.
The biggest takeaway seems to be that you want to target batters a bit deeper in the order and those in the outfield. The abundant options in the outfield will naturally dilute their ownership and help things be less restrictive. Corey Seager will not see that same benefit at shortstop. And as Clint Frazier showed, bargain bats will come at a high cost in ownership, so Chase Utley in the leadoff spot would be a bit scary. There are ways you can navigate around the suffocating ownership if you want to stack the Dodgers, but it means you'll have to pass on the top options and the bargains. If you're willing to do that, then they could be worth a look despite the restrictions.
