4 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for 7/27/17

The Chicago White Sox's bullpen has taken a beating in recent trades, and it's changing the way we view opposing offenses. Can that make the Chicago Cubs the top team to stack in MLB DFS?

Stacking can be a controversial topic in many daily fantasy sports, but you can count baseball as a glaring exception. Here, it's universal.

Using multiple players on the same team on a given day presents you with the opportunity to double dip. If one of your players hits an RBI double, there's a good chance he drove in another one of your guys. When you get the points for both the run and the RBI, you'll be climbing the leaderboards fast.

Each day here on numberFire, we'll go through four offenses ripe for the stacking. They could have a great matchup, be in a great park, or just have a lot of quality sticks in the lineup, but these are the offenses primed for big days that you may want a piece of.

Premium members can use our new stacking feature to customize their stacks within their optimal lineups for the day, choosing the team you want to stack and how many players you want to include. You can also check out our hitting heat map, which provides an illustration of which offenses have the best combination of matchup and potency.

Now, let's get to the stacks. With the split slates, we'll be focusing exclusively on the main slate beginning at 7 pm Eastern. Here are the teams you should be targeting in daily fantasy baseball today.

Chicago Cubs

For a hot second this spring, it was no longer fun to stack against Mike Pelfrey. The Chicago White Sox were using him in shorter spurts before turning the game over to their bullpen, and it worked out pretty well. But with the recent changes to said bullpen, that strategy is no longer as frightening for the opposing offenses, and it puts the Chicago Cubs in a great spot to score some runs.

For the full season, the White Sox rank 11th in bullpen SIERA, making them an above-average unit. This means that when Pelfrey leaves, your expected run totals over the final four or so innings aren't too enticing.

But those full-season numbers are tainted. The White Sox have traded relievers David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle, and Anthony Swarzak within the past 10 days, and they were all dealing this year. When we remove them from the equation and look just at the active roster, the White Sox fall all the way to 29th in SIERA. That means the four non-Pelfrey innings are suddenly dripping in value, and it makes the shorter-stint Pelfrey strategy less viable. With Pelfrey's SIERA up at 5.46 on the season, it's time to go back to stacking hard against him.

Even with this laissez-faire attitude about stacking against Pelfrey, we should be focusing heavily on the left-handed batters. From a batted-ball perspective, the righties don't offer much until the game goes to the bullpen.

Pelfrey's 2017 Platoon Splits Hard-Hit Rate Soft-Hit Rate Fly-Ball Rate Ground-Ball Rate
Versus RHB 25.0% 26.5% 25.8% 58.3%
Versus LHB 33.3% 19.7% 42.2% 39.7%

This means we should be willing to leave guys like Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras off our rosters. But all the sweet, sweet lefties they have to offer? With Pelfrey's struggles combined with the suddenly doggy doo bullpen, it's open season on snagging those bad boys.
