3 Under-the-Radar MLB FanDuel Plays for 6/19/19

When being contrarian in daily fantasy sports, there's a fine line between taking a calculated risk and being reckless. But differentiating your lineups from everyone else is the name of the game if you plan on taking down one of those highly lucrative DFS tournaments. Whether it's because of Vegas totals, other options at a given position, or some gem you've found that everyone is overlooking, we can always find potential under-owned plays if we look hard enough.

Here are three such players to consider branching out for on FanDuel's main slate

Trevor Richards, P, Miami Marlins

FanDuel Price: $7,900

A 10-game slate has plenty of options to sift through, but does Trevor Richards make a viable tournament option?

The short answer is yes, but it might not be so obvious at first glance. What it comes down to is very simple, Richards is up against the St. Louis Cardinals, who are not good. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, the Cardinals are as bad as they come right now. Since May 19th the Cardinals have a 90 wRC+ (last in the league), a .160 team ISO (25th in the league), and a 24.7% strikeout rate (seventh worst in the league) versus right-handed pitchers.

They might not stay as one of the worst teams in the league, but if they are there right now, this presents an opportunity to attack. A 4.48 implied run total for the Cardinals should see most people stay away from this matchup, but Richards has allowed three or fewer earned runs in six of his last eight starts and should be able to handle them.

Chris Taylor, SS, Los Angeles Dodgers

FanDuel Price: $2,500

A 4.48 implied run total for the Los Angeles Dodgers is solid tonight, but will any of their players go overlooked?

There are plenty of power hitters in the Dodgers lineup and Chris Taylor isn't considered one of them, which is why he is passed up in favor of the other starters. Regardless of lacking the power stats on the surface, his underlying numbers are strong and he should be a great option given how cheap he is tonight.

Taylor comes in with a very solid .230 ISO versus left-handed pitchers this season but can be held back by his 25.5% strikeout rate. The power is certainly there for him, at times, and at other times, he can end with a zero in the fantasy points column. That variance should be okay tonight versus Drew Pomeranz, who has a 4.82 xFIP and a .395 wOBA allowed to righty hitters this season.

Nick Markakis, OF, Atlanta Braves

FanDuel Price: $3,000

Is a lefty versus lefty matchup going to keep people away from Nick Markakis tonight despite the fact the Atlanta Braves have 5.16 implied team total tonight?

That 5.16 implied run total is the second highest on the slate but even with that Markakis shouldn't be as highly owned compared to his teammates, Freddie Freeman, Ronald Acuna, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, and Josh Donaldson. There is legitimately half a lineup of players who could be picked before Markakis, but that just means lower ownership and still a great matchup.

He is up against Steven Matz, who has a 4.67 xFIP and .389 wOBA versus left-handed hitters this season, along with a surprisingly low 21.7% strikeout rate considering this is a same-sided matchup. Markakis can hold his own in this matchup with a 41.4% hard-hit rate and a super low 10.0% strikeout rate.
