Mets' Edwin Diaz (knee surgery) likely out for season
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz is undergoing surgery to repair a complete tear of his right patellar tendon, Mets general manager Billy Eppler announced Thursday.
Diaz suffered the injury on Wednesday night while celebrating Puerto Rico's victory over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Eppler said the usual recovery timeline for this injury is eight months and that best-case scenario would be around six months. David Robertson, Adam Ottavino, and Brooks Raley are the Mets' other options at closer, with Robertson as the favorite to replace Diaz.
Diaz converted 32-35 saves last season with a 50.2% strikeout rate and 7.7% walk rate over 62 innings (61 appearances).
