The '06 team was very good, but two years later that same team had gained some valuable experience. Ellington and Lawson were then juniors compared to being freshmen in their first run. Hansbrough played his final collegiate season, as was the same for Danny Green.

Ellington, Lawson and Hansbrough combined for 53.1 points per game and 19.1 win shares on the season. Green stepped up to add 13.1 points per game for 6.3 additional win shares. People questioned the depth of the team, but the starting squad was so good it didn't matter who came after.

With a 34-4 record, the Tar Heels again ranked second in the nation with 89.8 points per game. The efficiency with which their offense operated placed them atop the 99th percentile as they once again got up and down the floor with the best of them. Their pace put them in the 91st percentile of all teams.

Again, Hansbrough was voted first-team All-American. But, it was Ellington, voted the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, who helped the Tar Heels to a national championship win over the Michigan State Spartans.
