Cardinals acquire quarterback Josh Dobbs via trade with Browns

The Arizona Cardinals have traded for quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns, per the NFL's Tom Pelissero.

What It Means:

The Cardinals will be without starting quarterback Kyler Murray (ACL) for the early part of the 2023 and had been deliberating between oft-injured backup Colt McCoy and raw rookie Clayton Tune as their potential fill-in until Murray returned. Neither quarterback impressed in the preseason, likely prompting the team to acquire Dobbs via trade with the Browns. Dobbs now has a legitimate shot at being the Cardinals' Week 1 starter.

Dobbs made two surprising starts for the Tennessee Titans a year ago, snatching their starting job after expected backup Malik Willis proved unprepared for the NFL. He completed 40 of his 68 attempts in those games for 411 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, and could reasonably be expected to offer the Cardinals more than either McCoy or Tune as the team awaits Murray's return.
