3 Daily Fantasy NHL Stacks for 1/19/21

In daily fantasy hockey, stacking is a key strategy in tournaments. We want to correlate our lineups with up to four players to maximize our upside, as if one player on a line is scoring goals, it's likely that his linemates are getting assists as well. Ideally, we'll want players that will get a lot of ice time together on an even strength line and a power play line. Two good resources for line combinations are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceoff.com, so be sure to check those sites for up to date line information.

We’ve got almost a week of the new season under our belts, so we’ve started to get a feel for how teams will deploy their players and lines. So let’s take a look at some stacks we can use on this eight game slate.

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers aren't the sexiest team to stack, but they have a few things going in their favor tonight. They've played just one game so far and scored five goals on Sunday. The lines don't work perfectly in terms of getting correlation at both even strength and the power play, but it gives us some options.

The first line of Aleksander Barkov ($7,100), Carter Verhaeghe ($3,300) and Anthony Duclair ($4,300) is definitely affordable. Verhaeghe and Duclair will play on the second power-play unit together, while Barkov will be on the top unit. His unit will consist of Jonathan Huberdeau ($7,400) and Patric Hornqvist ($5,200), who play together on the second line alongside Alexander Wennberg ($3,700). These pieces are all viable in this game. Whether you want to go with a power-play stack or an even-strength stack, they all could have success in this game.

The Panthers take on the Chicago Blackhawks, who have struggled to keep the puck out of their net, as expected. They've allowed five goals in each of their first three games. This is one reason why Florida has the highest implied team total on this slate, sitting at 3.63. In defense, Florida is one of the rare teams still using two defensemen on the power play, so both Aaron Ekblad ($5,200) and Keith Yandle ($4,000) are usable in any stack.

The Panthers can be an affordable stack depending on how you want to do it. Given that it's early in the season and the line combinations don't all mesh together cleanly at five-on-five and the power play, not all of these pieces will likely be popular.

Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets did not have the best showing on Monday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. They lost 3-1 and had just 26% of the expected goals, according to Natural Stat Trick. They made some changes to the lineup heading into this game, and they are in what should be a bounce-back spot.

The top line still consists of the duo of Mark Scheifele ($7,500) and Blake Wheeler ($6,800), but Andrew Copp ($3,600) is now alongside them. Scheifele is our top-projected skater by quite a wide margin, and Wheeler is fourth for wingers. These two are also on the first power play, so they make for a good combination whether or not you want to add the third wheel in Copp. Paul Stastny ($4,900) and Kyle Connor ($7,400) also are on that top man-advantage unit, and Connor is projecting as the third highest scoring winger today, per our model. You could play all four of these power-play forwards as they have a high upside to connect on a few power-play goals tonight.

The Jets travel from Toronto to play the Ottawa Senators. The Senators haven't been terrible to start the season, but they have allowed the second most scoring chances per 60 minutes and the fifth most high danger chances per 60. The Sens were projected to finish last in the North division, and a lot of it has to do with lack of depth at defense. The Jets have an implied goal total of 3.28, the fourth highest on the slate, so the oddsmakers are projecting them to thrive in Ottawa tonight.

With how much our projections like them, the Jets should be a stack you're willing to play tonight. You can get unique and play the second line as it likely won't be as popular as the first.

Colorado Avalanche

After a disappointing opening game, the Colorado Avalanche did their thing on Friday night. They won 8-0 over a solid St. Louis Blues team, and all of our fantasy favorites got in on the act.

They decided to reunite the trio of Nathan MacKinnon ($8,600), Gabriel Landeskog ($6,700) and Mikko Rantanen ($7,700), and they each had at least two real-world points. They also combined for 13 shots on goal in a totally dominant performance. Cale Makar ($6,200) also helped their power play, as he recorded three helpers with the man advantage. It was a total demolition, and while that can't be projected tonight, Colorado should do well again tonight.

The Avs will face the Los Angeles Kings on the road tonight and are the biggest favorites at -250. Their implied goal total is 3.28, tied for the fourth highest. The Kings lost their first two games 4-3 after being up 3-1 in each game, and those were both against the Minnesota Wild, a team known for their scoring struggles. The Avalanche obviously don't have that problem, and Colorado really has the ability to rack up goals in any game, as we saw on Friday.

This stack is very expensive, but it could be a tournament winner tonight. If you take the cheaper elements of the Florida stack, it is possible to make it work, and that would give you two stacks on teams with high implied totals.
