3 Daily Fantasy NHL Stacks for 2/9/21
In daily fantasy hockey, stacking is a key strategy in tournaments. We want to correlate our lineups with up to four players to maximize our upside as if one player on a line is scoring goals, it's likely that his linemates are getting assists as well. Ideally, we'll want players that will get a lot of ice time together on an even-strength line and a power-play line. Two good resources for line combinations are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceoff.com, so be sure to check those sites for up to date line information.
Tuesday has two games that we saw on Monday and five other games. Let’s look at some stacks to help us win on this slate.
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers are a surprise in the Central division. They've played a pretty soft part of their schedule to start, but they've done well, with just one regulation loss. The main man on the Panthers is Aleksander Barkov ($7,400), as he has been for the past handful of years. He's off to a good start this season, with 11 points in the first nine games. He also leads the team with 37 shots on goal. He comes with two very affordable wingers. Anthony Duclair ($4,500) now plays with Barkov on the power play and at even strength. Duclair has yet to score a goal this season but scored 23 last season and has 13 shots in his last three games, so a goal could be coming soon. Carter Verhaeghe ($4,700) rounds out the top line and leads the team in goals with six, but doesn't get run with the Barkov power-play unit. This unit comes in at a very affordable $16,600 in salary, which is great for this matchup.
The Panthers will take on the Detroit Red Wings for the second time in three games. Things did not go as planned for Florida on Sunday, as they lost 4-1. While Detroit has improved their defensive game this season, they still allow the eighth-most goals per game. This stems from having a bad penalty kill, which is the fifth-worst in the league. This brings Keith Yandle ($4,400) into play, as the power-play quarterback for the Panthers who comes at a great value. Yandle has seven points this season, including three in three games against the Red Wings.
Florida has the third-highest implied team total and is a big favorite at -220. This line has both a nice total salary and also has upside that you'll need in tournament lineups.
Edmonton Oilers
Well, last night did not go as planned for those of us who stacked the Edmonton Oilers. We'll have to chalk it up to randomness in hockey and go back to them in a great spot again. It's not like they did nothing, as Leon Draisaitl ($8,200) had a goal and an assist. It's just that if you played him with Connor McDavid ($9,000), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($7,200), and/or Tyson Barrie ($5,400), you weren't going to win any tournaments. McDavid still had an assist, extending his point streak to 10 straight games. The other players we'd want from Edmonton did not do much, but they'll get a chance to do it tonight against the same opponent.
The Oilers will play the Ottawa Senators again. It's been diminishing returns for the Oilers against the Senators this season after they blew up in the first game, but that was always likely to happen with Ottawa's top defenseman Thomas Chabot back in the lineup after that game. The Oilers were still able to dominate the game last night, putting up 16 high danger chances in the game, according to Natural Stat Trick. Ottawa is the only team allowing over four goals per game, and also allows the most shot attempts per 60 minutes. This is why we can go back to this stack of these four players, as the fantastic matchup we saw last night is still there despite their relatively poor fantasy performance.
The Oilers' implied goal total is 3.72, the highest on the slate. Edmonton is usually one of the highest upside stacks on any slate, and that's no different tonight against one of the league's worst defensive teams. Let's go back to them in this spot tonight.
Vegas Golden Knights
The Vegas Golden Knights seem to like playing in the new West division, especially since they have yet to play the Colorado Avalanche. They've been feasting on the lower teams in the division, going 7-1-1 to start the season. The Golden Knights have dominated the puck in most of their games this season, with the third-most shots per 60 minutes and the second most expected goals per 60 minutes. Mark Stone ($7,700) and Max Pacioretty ($8,100) are making the offense click. Stone is averaging 5.11 points per 60 minutes, the fourth-best rate in the league. Pacioretty has been the trigger man that we expect him to be, with the second-best shot attempt rate in the NHL. These guys combine at both even strength and on the power play. Their even-strength center is still Chandler Stephenson ($3,800), who it's tough to love for fantasy, but he is very affordable and scored two goals on Sunday.
Vegas gets another good matchup against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. The Ducks are just relying on John Gibson to be great in most games they play, as they allow the fifth most shot attempts, third-most scoring chances, and fourth-most high danger chances per 60 minutes in the league. In the two previous meetings against Anaheim earlier this season, Pacioretty had a goal and five shots in both games, and Stone had two points in each game. Shea Theodore ($6,400) is a great option at defense to go with this stack. He has nine points in nine games and leads all defensemen in shot rate, averaging over 10 per 60 minutes. He plays on the power play with Stone and Pacioretty and should be able to have another good game against his former team.
The Golden Knights carry the second-highest team total of the night. This stack has been fairly reliable and also has the potential for big nights with how they carry the play. Getting them into a lineup is certainly a viable strategy tonight.
