Referees Becoming the Show

Let's hope it does not happen often over the next set of fixtures, but the referees are bound to become a talking point. Mike Dean was topic of much discussion in Manchester City's 6-0 win over Chelsea as he dramatically pointed to the penalty spot. His theatrics gained him plenty of ridicule. He has also given out four more red cards than anyone else this season. He will not have an impact on either slate as he was assigned the early Saturday match between Tottenham and Burnley and will serve as a fourth official next Wednesday.

Anthony Taylor has awarded the most yellow cards of any official this year and he will be in charge of Crystal Palace and Leicester as well as Southampton versus Fulham. Those are two matches in which the teams are scratching to get away from the relegation zone and it may get chippy.

Officials like Roger East and Simon Hooper have not taken on the main referee role often this year. Hooper has been the head official in only six matches, so his inexperience could show in Bournemouth versus Wolves. The inexperienced referees may be getting more chances as the schedule moves off its normal rotation due to cup play. Hopefully they will not become the story.
