Fantasy Baseball: 10 Surprises So Far in 2017
Avisail Garcia, OF, Chicago White Sox
Preseason Average Draft Position (ADP): 408.10
The Start
Just about everything Avisail Garcia has done for the Chicago White Sox this season shows just how bad he's been in the years prior.
Since debuting in 2012, he's produced a wRC+ higher than 100 once, and it was a 101 mark in 2014. Through 142 plate appearances this season, it's at a staggering 158.
His single-season career high in homers is 13, which came in 2015 as a result of 601 plate appearances, and he already has 6.
And, my personal favorite -- in the five years leading up to 2017, he's been worth a grand total of -1.4 fWAR, yet has posted a 1.5 mark at this point in the season.
How Sustainable Is it?
One of Garcia's biggest issues is his plate discipline. Like, he swings about as much as Jonathan Schoop throughout his career, and it's actually gotten worse this season.
The outfielder's swing rate is currently 57.2%, and while his 74.0% contact rate would be a career high for a single season, it looks pretty hard to sustain with a 52.4% ground-ball rate and 28.2% fly-ball rate.
All of a sudden, that .392 BABIP looks even more inflated than it already did.
