The Kansas City Royals have a 4.64 implied team total versus Matt Boyd, who has a 5.09 SIERA and 41.1% hard-hit rate. Under normal circumstances, it would stand to reason that if you could get whoever was batting third in this matchup at just over $3,000, that would be a strong play -- except that it's Lorenzo Cain.
Compared to your typical middle-of-the-order bat, Cain completely lacks any power, with just two home runs and a .099 isolated power (ISO). He has some speed (12 stolen bases), but that isn't enough to make up for an uninspiring .314 wOBA.
In a stronger offense, his lineup spot could at least allow him to stumble into a high amount of runs and RBI (like a Xander Bogaerts). But that simply isn't the case on the Royals, who possess a 76 wRC+.
Despite the matchup, there's little to get excited about in rostering Cain. If you want to attack Boyd, use the more imposing Salvador Perez or perhaps take a shot with Jorge Bonifacio in tournaments.
