Chad Bettis, Colorado Rockies

Chad Bettis is a two-start pitcher this week with a tough but surprisingly manageable start at Houston followed by a home date with Milwaukee over the weekend.

Houston is slightly better on the road than at home in most traditional categories except home runs and slugging percentage -- 51 of their 83 long balls have been hit in the friendly confines. With that said, Houston has the worst batting average at home among all teams, and their on-base percentage is among the five worst. Houston owns a 2.79 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and have struck out a league-high 307 times at home, 30 times more than the next closest team -– Seattle -– in two more games. The Astros’ 28 double plays is also tied for sixth in the majors. The risk is there for Bettis, but he of zero home runs allowed and an ERA markedly higher than his FIP stands a chance to get a win.

Bettis’ home start against the Brewers is more appealing. The Brew Crew have scored the fourth fewest runs on the road this season while producing the fourth worst batting average and second worst OPS. Milwaukee also has the third worst walk total in baseball at 61, while hitting into 27 double plays, a healthy number that lands them among the top totals overall. Those double plays are aided by a 1.04 ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio, tied for fourth highest with the White Sox. Bettis has induced more ground ball outs than fly ball outs in four of six starts in 2015, three of which were quality starts and all team wins for the Rockies.
