4 Under-the-Radar Daily Fantasy Baseball Plays for 8/9/16
Rick Porcello, P, Boston Red Sox
FanDuel Price: $9,100
Why He Will Go Overlooked:
When your opponent is projected for 4.3 runs (10th-highest on the slate) and you are priced as the fifth-most expensive pitcher on FanDuel, you aren't going to be a popular option. That is the exact situation in which Rick Porcello finds himself tonight. The fact that Max Scherzer is on this slate and Kenta Maeda finds himself in a matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies just further confirms that Porcello will find himself low-owned tonight.
Why You Should Use Him:
Porcello gets the New York Yankees, who, while not often thought of as an elite matchup, have really struggled against righties this year. The Yanks rank 25th in both wOBA and wRC+ against right-handers. Their struggles this season have been further accentuated while on the road. New York's road .293 wOBA ranks 28th, while their .122 ISO ranks 29th.
Tonight, the Yanks get -- you guessed it -- a road matchup against an effective righty.
Porcello, one of just five pitchers with at least 14 wins, has been even better while pitching at home this year. He has seen his ERA drop from 3.70 on the road to 3.21, and he has posted a perfect 10-0 record at home, winning 10 of 11 starts. In his one home matchup against the Yankees, Porcello tossed seven innings of shutout ball, while also collecting six strikeouts.
Porcello also has an excellent chance to pick up a win tonight, as his Red Sox are projected for 5.2 runs against Luis Severino -- the most on the slate.
To be fair, Porcello's upside tonight is nowhere near that of an elite strikeout artist like Scherzer. The Yanks rank 25th in strikeout rate against righties with just a 19.4% strikeout rate. However, Porcello has a very high floor (39-plus FanDuel points in five-straight starts) and should see low ownership. If not confident in the other top options, Porcello is a safe fallback option.
