What It Means:

Whitlock was slow to start the 2023 season while working back from offseason hip surgery and dealt with an elbow injury during the year, but appears to be fully healthy as the Red Sox kick off their Spring Training regimen. He could be leaned on for plenty of work in the Red Sox' rotation this season.

Whitlock has yet to pitch more than 78.1 innings in any of his 3 seasons as a pro, reaching just 71.2 innings last year. 2023 was also his weakest statistical season yet, seeing him average a 5.15 ERA and a 1.326 WHIP while dealing with injuries. The Red Sox will clearly be hoping he can regain his rookie season form, which saw him post a 1.96 ERA as a closer. It remains to be seen whether he can hold up as a starting pitcher.
