Broncos' Russell Wilson moving into backup role, Jarrett Stidham to start in Week 17
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson will not start Week 17's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Wilson has been benched by Denver and will be in a backup role for Week 17's clash with the Chargers. Jarrett Stidham will get the start. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, after three losses in their last four games, the Broncos are "looking to spark its offense and see what it has in Stidham." There are also financial considerations factoring into this move. According to Schefter, Wilson is "owed $39 million next season, but he has an additional $37M that would become guaranteed if he can’t pass a physical by early March." This move assures that option won't trigger and provides the Broncos with some financial flexibility.
In 15 starts this season, Wilson has completed 297 passes on 447 attempts for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, with 341 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.
