Fantasy Baseball: Potential Bust Candidates at Each Position

Catcher: Evan Gattis, Houston Astros

Current ADP: 110.09

Probably the most important ingredient to being a productive fantasy asset is getting the opportunity to play. Evan Gattis is not necessarily landing on this list because of his performance, but the Houston Astros' moves from this past winter could make it hard for him to get consistent playing time.

The offensive production is there -- among catchers with at least 300 plate appearances in 2016, Gattis led the group in homers (32), tied for fifth in RBI's (72) and tied for sixth in runs scored (58). A pretty good value considering his ADP, right?

Well, it is, until you realize who he's competing with for playing time.

The Astros first acquired Brian McCann from the New York Yankees in the middle of November, which will displace Gattis from regular time behind the plate. Not a problem, though -- he could easily just slide into the designated hitter role.

However, that became complicated once Houston signed Carlos Beltran to a one-year deal just a couple weeks later. He'll probably get some time in the outfield, but entering his age-40 season, he'll likely get the majority of his opportunities as the designated hitter.

Our projections are tabbing Gattis for 23 homers, 63 RBI's and 52 runs scored, but in 426 plate appearances. There are plenty of ways for the situation in Houston to shake out over the course of 162 games, but as of right now, it'll be tough for Gattis to reach those numbers without ample opportunity.
