Fantasy Baseball: Potential Bust Candidates at Each Position
First Base: Wil Myers, San Diego Padres
Current ADP: 54.84
In 2016, there were just three players who hit 25-plus homers and stole at least 25 bases while driving in 80 or more runs and scoring at least 90 on their own. Those players include Mookie Betts, Mike Trout and Wil Myers.
That's some pretty lofty company, and who knows how great of a breakout season Myers could've had if he was as consistent throughout the year as the top-two finishers in the American League MVP race.
Here's a quick glimpse at how he performed in the first half compared to the second half in categories like OPS, Isolated Power (ISO), walk rate (BB%), strikeout rate (K%), wOBA and wRC+.
2016 | PA | OPS | ISO | BB% | K% | wOBA | wRC+ |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
First Half | 339 | .873 | .236 | 9.5% | 20.6% | .369 | 134 |
Second Half | 260 | .697 | .158 | 10.8% | 27.6% | .306 | 91 |
Even more curious, though, was how his numbers were complete opposites depending on where the San Diego Padres were playing.
2016 | PA | OPS | ISO | BB% | K% | wOBA | wRC+ |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Home | 304 | .954 | .263 | 11.5% | 19.8% | .401 | 159 |
Road | 295 | .633 | .139 | 8.5% | 27.7% | .278 | 69 |
While he can mostly control how many homers he hits and bases he steals, racking up the RBI's and runs scored will depend on his teammates, and San Diego is expected to be baseball's worst team in 2017.
Our projections expect Myers to slug 22 homers and swipe 18 bags, which is unique from a first baseman. However, we're also projecting just 79 RBI's and 82 runs scored.
This would all equate to a solid season but probably not what some would hope for based on what he accomplished in 2016.
