In the same quadrant of the bracket, Jevon Carter will take center stage for his Mountaineers. After being limited to fewer than 30 minutes a game in 2015-16, Carter's exploded with a larger workload over the last two seasons. In 34.6 minutes per game, he's putting up a career-best 17.0 points with 2.1 threes on 38.8% from three this season. He's doing much more than scoring, too, posting peripherals of 6.6 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 steals (tied for second in the nation).

The stats are great, but they don't tell the whole story behind Carter's dominance in the middle of the Mountaineers' pressure defense. With a steal percentage of 4.7% and 2.5 defensive win shares, Carter has West Virginia 20th in adjusted defensive rating (91.2) and 14th in steal percentage (11.4%).

In San Diego, Carter and company will play the Murray State Racers in the always dangerous 5/12 game.
