Similar to the Jordan Howard situation in Chicago, there were rumblings throughout the offseason about when rookie Wendell Smallwood might pass Ryan Mathews on the depth chart as the Eagles' starting running back.

After Mathews exited the Week 3 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers early on Sunday, Smallwood shared the backfield with Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner. Each back had an impressive outing against Pittsburgh with Smallwood taking 17 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles are on a bye in Week 4, and it's unclear why Mathews missed most of the game, but if he misses any games following the by with an injury, look for Smallwood to fill in for Mathews, splitting the backfield with Sproles.
