21. Lions: Solomon Thomas, Defensive End

Top Needs: IOL, DE, DT, ILB

The Detroit Lions’ concern is on the defensive side of the ball, where they ended up as the 11th-worst by Adjusted Defensive Rushing NEP per play, and second-worst in the passing component of it. To address this, they select defensive end Solomon Thomas out of Stanford.

At 6’3” and 273 pounds, Thomas is a bit of a tweener when it comes to defining whether he fits as a defensive end or tackle in a 4-3 scheme, but he will be a boon as a strong-side complement to Ezekiel Ansah and kick inside on passing downs. His elite run defense skills and power pass-rushing acumen speak for themselves. He has a variety of aggressive, effective pass-rushing moves that he strings together, including a spin move reminiscent of Dwight Freeney.

Over his last two seasons as a starter, Thomas averaged 49.0 tackles, 12.3 stuffs, and 6.0 sacks per season at Stanford. Thomas is a rising star and will fit well for the Lions.
