More often than not, there’s not a lot of love for players who seem to get let go by their former teams. We are creatures of recency bias, after all.
Still, slot receiver superhero Jordan Matthews will play his part in a darn good offense in the New England Patriots, and being on a good offense with an elite quarterback like Tom Brady might be good for a player's fantasy potential.
Matthews is currently going undrafted in PPR leagues, but he’s been reasonably reliable in recent years. In 2017, Matthews was 60th in Reception NEP per target among the 119 receivers to see at least 25 targets. In other words, he was exactly average.
The big damper on his fantasy production last season was simply due to health (he played just 10 games). Even if he slots in as the Patriots’ third receiver in targets, that role has averaged 60.3 looks over the past three years; at Matthews’ career yards per attempt and touchdown rates, that would put him at a floor of 94.0 PPR points, or WR70, this year. He’s useful, cheap and brings his upside in the event of another Chris Hogan injury.
