5 NFL Stats to Know Through Week 4
Jared Goff posts a 158.3 Passer Rating
Jared Goff continued his hot start to the 2018 season on Thursday night, as he led the Rams to their fourth consecutive win to open the 2018 season over the Vikings. Goff completed 26 of his 33 pass attempts, on his way to 465 yards and 5 touchdowns. These figures were good enough for a perfect passer rating of 158.3. It was the first time a quarterback has managed this feat (minimum 20 pass attempts) since the 2015 season. Ironically, the last man to achieve perfection was the man on the opposite side of the field to Goff on Thursday night, Kirk Cousins.
There have been 18 instances of players posting a perfect passer rating since the 2000 season. Goff is the second Rams quarterback to achieve it, after Kurt Warner did it in Week 5 of the 2000 season. Of the 18 instances, none of the quarterbacks managed to achieve the rating while attempting as many passes as Goff's 33.
Goff's 1,406 passing yards in the opening four weeks of the season are the 8th most by any quarterback since 2000. However, his passer rating of 127.3 at the quarter pole is the third-highest, trailing only Peyton Manning's 137.0 in 2013 and Tom Brady's 134.7 in 2007. In both of those seasons, the player ended the season as the league MVP.
Goff's efficiency was evident to all, especially using numberFire metrics. Goff's Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back on Thursday night was 0.84, the second-highest among all players who attempted at least 20 passes. Only Mitchell Trubisky of the Chicago Bears had more, finishing with 1.04. (You can learn more about NEP in our glossary).
