Mike McCarthy Is Gone

There were a lot of ups and downs during Mike McCarthy's tenure as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. They won a Super Bowl back in 2010 and were perennial playoff contenders with Aaron Rodgers at the wheel. But one Super Bowl can only get you so much leash -- roughly eight years' worth -- and the team axed their longtime coach following yesterday's embarrassing loss at home to the Arizona Cardinals.

This might be good news for the entire Packers offense, as Rodgers has been having one of the worst seasons of his career. With his career-low 4.5 percent touchdown rate he's become more of a quarterback streamer in fantasy leagues than the every-week starter we'd grown accustomed to over the years. A changeup in coaching and play calling could benefit the struggling stud.

A change in coaching staff might also help solidify Aaron Jones' role, as Jones inexplicably ceded 11 touches to Jamaal Williams. We may never know why McCarthy decided to give Williams so many touches in his final game, but it could have been one of the reasons he lost his job. This wasn't even a case of "riding the hot hand" as Jones outclassed Williams in virtually every measurable facet of the game. Not a single one of Williams' carries added expected points to the Packers' total, and both backs had 50 percent Success Rates in the passing game. It was a real head-scratcher of a decision.

Hopefully, McCarthy's replacement Joe Philbin is able to get a little bit more out of this once-great Packers offense. Things probably can't get any worse for the Green and Gold.
