Courtland Sutton Isn't Who We Hope He Is

Look, Courtland Sutton is an impressive athlete and an exciting player. But when it comes to fantasy football, he's just not what you've been expecting.

There were high hopes for Sutton as a second-round pick the 2018 NFL Draft. His best comparable player on PlayerProfiler.com is Alshon Jeffery, who has had a handful of dominant fantasy football seasons. He earned a starting wide receiver spot at the beginning of the season. The Denver Broncos traded away Demaryius Thomas, then lost Emmanuel Sanders to a devastating injury. The opportunities have absolutely been there for the young receiver, but so far in his rookie season Sutton has failed to live up to our expectations.

His Week 14 performance was likely the most disappointing one of the season. Despite standing atop the team's extremely-vacated depth chart, Sutton only managed to produce 14 yards on 2 receptions in the Broncos' upset loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Meanwhile, fellow rookies DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick balled out in the very same game. They combined for 14 receptions, 132 yards and a touchdown despite barely seeing the field prior to this week.

We can speculate as to why Sutton is struggling in the offseason -- which is fast approaching -- but for now, we just need to know that he's not who we want him to be. He's not going to become a clone of a young Alshon Jeffery and magically win us our fantasy championships. It's disappointing, but you might have to let Sutton go for the 2018 season. When Patrick and Hamilton out-target a guy 19 to 6, it's probably time to move on.
