Zac Stacy, St. Louis Rams

This won’t console owners out there, but Zac Stacy's five-point performance was hardly his fault. He ran hard and maximized his attempts, but this offense is in shambles. As a team, they posted a league worst NEP in Week 1 according to our metrics. The quarterback position is a mess, and the offensive line wasn’t nearly as effective as many were hoping it would be with the addition of rookie mauler Greg Robinson (who struggled in limited action).

The good news is that Stacy out-touched the fast rising Benny Cunningham. The bad news is that it was only by three touches. Cunningham clearly adds more juice in the receiving game, but Stacy’s patience and toughness should continue to garner him plenty of carries if the Rams can keep games competitive.

Unfortunately, getting outscored by a Matt Cassel-led Vikings team 34-6 doesn’t bode well for his usage going forward. It’s going to be an inconsistent season for the Rams’ lead back, as his team struggles to stay competitive each week. Stacy is a volume back, and if he keeps losing touches to the backup or the game script, how effective can he really be?

Recommendation: This is a tough situation that doesn’t look like it will get better. Cunningham will continue to steal much needed touches, and the Rams could get blown out quite a bit. Lower your expectations, play the matchups, and look to trade him if he has a great week in the near future.
