Dexter McCluster has been a gadget player and nothing more since he entered the league back in 2010. It was shocking that the Kansas City Chiefs selected him at 36th overall that year, but perhaps more shocking, he’s had just one year in his career with more than 100 opportunities despite his draft pedigree. Fortunately, teams have realized that he is a slot receiver/running back ‘tweener and kick returner at best and haven’t overutilized his limited skillset. When you consider that McCluster is regarded mostly as a receiving option out of the backfield yet has a career Reception NEP per target of 0.34, something just doesn’t add up. As a rusher, too, he’s limited; he has a career -0.11 Rushing NEP per attempt.
In a suddenly-full cupboard of Tennessee Titans skill position players, there doesn’t appear to be much room -- or many roles -- left for the diminutive scatback. DeMarco Murray and rookie Derrick Henry will be the lead tandem at running back, and David Cobb and Bishop Sankey are cheaper depth options than McCluster. At wide receiver, too, the slot is filled by Kendall Wright and Rishard Matthews. McCluster has a $3.65 million cap hit in 2016 and just $1 million in dead money.
