Blake Martinez, Inside Linebacker

This edition of Plugging the Gaps features two linebacker options that we would consider “ambulance-chasing” plays, but when you can get an edge on your opponents by beating them to the next man up, I consider that savvy and scrupulous.

Green Bay Packers inside linebacker Blake Martinez has been functioning as the team’s primary sub-package/nickel linebacker but has also seen a smattering of action on base early downs alongside Jake Ryan, much more of a classic thumper.

Ryan got injured in Week 10’s game, however, which means Martinez should see an expanded role in Week 11. His 16 percent tackle rate is fourth among the 122 linebackers to play 30 snaps per game -- just ahead of Ryan -- and he’s seen some bonus coverage production as well, with three passes defended and one interception this year.

He and the Packers will look to redeem themselves this week against Washington, who have newly re-committed themselves to the running game: they have rushed the ball with a running back 54 total times across the last two games, not to mention 11 passing targets to running backs. Martinez could see some coverage time on tight end Jordan Reed, but he often covers the running back on passing downs too. There will be plenty of tackle volume and chances for him to make a play here.

Martinez is available in 97.3% of ESPN IDP leagues, and we project him for 7.12 tackles, 0.02 sacks, 0.38 passes defended, and a total score of 8.72 fantasy points in Week 11.
