3 Teams That Need Tony Romo in 2017
It's all but certain that Tony Romo won't be on the Dallas Cowboys roster next season.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that Romo is not going to want to be the Cowboys' backup next season and that trading him is the Cowboys top priority this offseason. Then, ESPN's Todd Archer speculated on Tuesday that Romo could very well be released by the Cowboys as that would open up more cap space than a trade.
So, Romo's time as a Cowboy is likely coming to an end. If he is in fact traded, Romo's preferred landing spot would be the Denver Broncos, according to Rappaport, but it doesn't seem that the Broncos are interested in making that move, although it's hard to know what to believe.
For any team which may acquire Romo, the potential that comes with the veteran quarterback isn't related to his talent, but rather his ability to stay healthy. Due to collarbone and back injuries, Romo has played in only five regular-season games over the past two years.
Yet, over his last 20 starts, Romo owns a 15-5 record. During his last full season as a starter -- 15 games in 2014 -- Romo threw 34 touchdowns to only 9 interceptions. He finished the season as the fourth-best quarterback, per our Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) metric.
It's unclear what the trade market would be or what compensation the Cowboys could receive in return for Romo. For comparison, the Minnesota Vikings traded a first-round selection and a conditional fourth-round pick for Sam Bradford following Teddy Bridgewater's injury. It's important to note, though, that Bradford is 29, while Romo will be 37 at the beginning of next season.
With Romo likely to suit up elsewhere in 2017, here are three teams which stand to benefit the most from having Romo under center.
