Houston Texans

The Houston Texans make sense as a potential Romo destination for a number of reasons.

They're a contender built with a strong defense. They're in the AFC South, and the Cowboys aren't scheduled to play the AFC South until the 2018 season. Most importantly, Brock Osweiler struggled mightily in his first season in Houston

Here at numberFire, our nERD metric measures how good a team actually is based upon their expected point differential against a league average team. At the end of the season, the Texans (-1.39) checked in as the 21st-ranked team in our nERD rankings. They ranked so low despite having the second-best defense in the league, per our schedule-adjusted metrics.

The Texans' offense was terrible with Osweiler at the controls. Houston finished with the third-worst offense, per NEP, only besting the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.

Of the 40 quarterbacks to throw at least 100 passes on the year, Osweiler (-21.86) was the third-worst quarterback, per our Passing NEP metric. He performed better than only Bryce Petty (-23.27) and Jared Goff (-64.56).

Although the Texans signed Osweiler to a $37 million deal just last year, Houston coach Bill O'Brien was noncommittal when asked about Osweiler's status heading into 2017.

The Texans advanced to the Divisional Round of the playoffs this year where they hung with the New England Patriots for a while before falling 34-16. Adding Romo to the Texans would further cement Houston as a legitimate contender in the AFC entering 2017.
