Hamstrung by the lack of a first-round pick, the Minnesota Vikings had to rely on free agency for a lot of needs: offensive line and running back were mostly filled by draft day (though more depth is always better). The Vikes nailed two mid-round picks in center Pat Elflein and guard Danny Isidora, both of whom make this offensive line unit instantly passable. They also moved up for running back Dalvin Cook after he slipped to the 41st overall pick in the draft; Cook could be the next great back on this run-first team but he may not make a big impact in 2017. They also secured linebackers Ben Gedeon and Elijah Lee, one of whom may end up taking over starting weak-side or middle duties down the road.

Wide receiver wasn’t a huge need, but Rodney Adams and Stacy Coley are both decent value picks, and Coley will likely help replace Cordarrelle Patterson on special teams. Defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson was also not a necessity, but insurance for the ever-injured Sharrif Floyd can’t hurt. Cornerback Jack Tocho is just depth in the secondary.
