Devin Funchess, a.k.a. Fun Fun, as Panthers' quarterback Cam Newton likes to call him, has had a rough go of it since the Panthers traded up to acquire him in the early second-round back in April. He dealt with a host of hamstring issues in OTAs and training camp, coinciding with unrealistic expectations being placed on him when Kelvin Benjamin went down with an ACL tear a few weeks before the season began.

Funchess has been healthy for most of the year, but given all of the activity he missed in the offseason, he's played the fourth-most snaps among Panther wide receivers thus far. And, unfortunately, Funchess has also had a couple of key drops this season that haven't helped his case for earning more snaps. But that may change starting in Week 10.

Funchess, while only receiving four targets for the day, was crazy productive with his looks against the Packers, registering an incredibly impressive 6.89 Reception NEP, equivalent to 1.72 Reception NEP per target, which translated to 3 catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. One of the catches he reeled in, aside from his touchdown grab, was a 52-yard reception where he was absolutely blanketed by a member of the Packers' secondary that he had no business catching, but managed to do so anyway.

The Panthers have been getting by with less than stellar production from their receiving corps all season and have likely been waiting on Funchess to put together a day like he did against the Packers, with limited opportunity, before taking the training wheels off a little. At any rate, it's worth putting a claim out there for Funchess to see if the Panthers do expand his role and if he can finally step into the number-one receiver role so many envisioned he'd occupy as soon as Benjamin went down.
