Keyarris Garrett, Wide Receiver

Most UDFA’s feel like a total longshot, but Keyarris Garrett out of Tulsa feels somehow like less of one. Garrett was projected to go in Round 3 or 4 by NFL.com, and it’s shocking that, with his profile, he didn’t get selected at all.

Garrett stands 6’3”, weighing 220 pounds, but still runs a shocking 4.53 40 Yard Dash, with a 36.5” Vertical Jump and 10’8” Broad Jump. He lights up the board in terms of measurables, and one could have guessed that some team would have gambled on his upside in the draft. He has a massive arm length, too, that allows him to high-point the ball well on fade routes and to keep cornerbacks out of his way.

His big question mark is whether or not his lack of immediacy off the snap and breaks in and out of his routes will hinder him in the NFL. It didn’t in college, however, as he racked up 1,588 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns on 96 catches in his 2015 season.

That clearly didn’t trouble the Carolina Panthers, who signed Garrett out of the UDFA pool. The surprising thing is the depth the Panthers now have in their wide receiving corps, with Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess leading the way, but the very solid deep threats of Philly Brown and Ted Ginn Jr. backing them up. Stephen Hill is also there as a project player, so it’s likely that Garrett would have to outperform Hill -- not impossible -- and wait out Ginn’s contract before getting any meaningful NFL snaps. Still, he fits the “big-n’-brutal” mold they like in their depth chart at this position.
